Use this as a guide to create a new document in HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language). Note: these instructions are designed for Macintosh users.
You will create a new HTML document using SimpleText, a simple word processing program you should have on your Macintosh (if you don't have SimpleText, you can use a similar program called TeachText.)
Before you begin make sure that you have both Netscape and SimpleText open. Double-check using the Applications Menu on the top right of your menu bar.
Now that both Netscape and Simple text open, make SimpleText your active application. Using the SimpleText menu bar: Go to File and New and to create a new document. Go to File on the Menu bar and save (or use the keyboard short cut apple s) and save the document on your floppy disk as yourname.html.
Good. You should now see yourname.html as the title of your window. Lets make a simple html document. Type in the following exactly:
Good. Now Save your document again.
Lets see hour yourname.html looks in Netscape. Go to the application Menu and make Netscape the active application.
Go to File on the Netscape Menu Bar and down to Open File. Use the Macintosh dialogue box to find the file on your floppy disk that you just saved (yourname.html).
How does your document look. Is something out of place? Is there a typo? Now you will need to go back and forth between viewing your document in teachtext, which shows you the source code, and viewing your document from Netscape, which is how your document looks to internet browsers. On a Macintosh, the easy way to go back and forth between Netscape and Teach Text is by using the application menu.
Using teach text open the yourname.html file and make the changes/corrections to the source code you think will fix the errors. Save.
Go Back to the application menu and make Netscape the active application (note the menu bar change). Now open the yourname.html file from Netscape, (hit the reload button to make sure Netscape isn't opening the old cached version).
Keep repeating the process above until your satisfied with your page. Also check the new.html sample I've created for you to check your work. Use this link to see how your page should look: Sample new.html
Now that you know the basics of an html document go back to the font practice page to see how the source code compares with what you see when you view the page via netscape.
